Our Advanced Linguistics courses specialise in equipping you with advanced techniques for analysing unwritten languages. These courses focus on accurately describing the sound system and grammatical structure of a language which will be used in making an alphabet and a dictionary in that particular language. All of this is necessary in order to teach literacy and translate the Bible within an ethnic language group setting.
COURSE DATES: 4 September 2024 - 18 February 2025
Our 'Advanced Phonology & Grammar' course teaches specialised techniques for analysing and formally describing previously unwritten languages. Such documentation will be used in developing an orthography and a dictionary, both of which are necessary for teaching literacy and translating the Bible for an unreached people group.

Our 'Field Linguistics' course gives you the opportunity to analyse real languages with the help of our course instructors. The first project is the linguistic analysis of a language spoken in the Highlands of Papua New Guinea. The second project will include working with a speaker of a language foreign to you, which will give you the opportunity to gather your own language data, complete a linguistic analysis of that data, and then present your conclusions in a formal write-up.
